Our Tides

We are the same waves born from different tides. We are one ocean but home to different species. We are harmless but defensive of our element. We aren't the same but we belong together.

Her part of the ocean is silent, waiting to make its move. On a deserted, breezy Sunday, you can hear her lap at the shore, claiming what's hers. She is calm when need is and shows her disappointment when she doesn't reach out to you. On your worst days, she embraces you with her warmth amidst the coldest winters. You don't know where she stops; almost invincible. She is vast in her heart but then, her heart is you.

Beyond the horizon, you see her thriving. You can't see her, you never will. But that's the beauty. Her tranquillity is not unheard of. She doesn't reach heights but lengths. She is everywhere, in your heart, in your mind and wrestles your body into staying. Above and around her is humidity, sweltering heat, and squawking birds but inside her, she waits to drown you in love, turn you around and show you her true colours – a little cyan, a tinge of teal, a dash of green and an abundance of beauty. There is a line she says that divides her from the clouds and the hues of the evening skies. She hates it. She wants to float in these skies and watch her tide swish against the Heavenly gates. She wants to grow but not at the cost of letting you go. Her boundaries break down as she leaps at them fiercely. Slowly, you'll see the horizon accept her.

There is a radiance that adds to her glow. It's not you, though. If you look beyond the skyscrapers and the indifferent crowds of people, you'll see how she got the sun and its skies to shine upon her. She continues to grow, embrace, and deep within, she's more than happy. She is content. When the sun dissolves into her, she takes care of it, cradles it till she's ready to nurture the moon. In a way, she's an unpatented mother. She is selfless and waits for the day the sun and the moon will do her heart justice. Your day may end on a tired note, but hers just begins. She doesn't belong to anyone, but the stars, the moon, the skies, and the sun belong with her. They don't meld well with skyscrapers and the American dream. I don't make the rules.

She is underestimated. Her fragility is mistaken for her weakness. Her natural gradient is underappreciated. Scientists say she is an overwhelmed body of deep layers, each peeling off a secret she hides in the soft coos of her presence on the shore. The first three layers are where you'll find what you expect – life, growth, love, and clarity. The next four remain forbidden. Only the trusted can open the vault, seek their prize, feel worthy and carry on. No one has ventured into that part of the ocean before. It is breathtakingly dangerous and above all, a daunting part of her.

Her voice isn't oppressed but constantly disrupted by our means to explore. If she shuts you out once and you may have just lost access to the only constant in your life. The deeper you go, the more truth you find in these waters. No, in her waters. The deeper you dare, the darker it becomes. She isn't harmful, just cautious of who comes and goes. Once you're in, her heart isn't blue anymore. It's a shade of truth, difficult to portray on a palette.

Her smile isn't poisonous more than it is mesmerising. She is what people call persuasive. She bears the children you cannot start your day without, she fights against those that deem you unworthy, she embraces you on your worst days and yet, you remain the way you are – carefree and indifferent. She is funny when she has to be but stormy isn't her thing. She is cautious but not boring. She is welcoming but not meek.

Her anger dissipates into disappointment and her tides become furious. But she knows no limits. She responds to love and repentance when she sees it. She teaches you to see beyond beauty, layers, and appearance.

When you think of her, beauty is synonymous as is power.
